Music Industry Legend Clive Davis Dies at 94

Clive Davis, a legendary music executive and record producer, died today, June 22, 2026, at the age of 94. Davis has shaped modern popular music and created a profound understanding of how music is heard throughout society. 

Davis was widely known for discovering and developing the biggest names in the booming music industry, including Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Janis Joplin, Santana, and Alicia Keys. He built a strong foundation in music through his passion and discovery.

Over a career spanning more than almost six decades, he served as president of Columbia Records from 1967 to 1973, founded Arista Records in 1974, and later launched J Records in 2000, becoming one of the most influential figures in the recording industry. 

Clive Davis was also nicknamed “the man with the golden ear,” which is well-suited for a man who accomplished so much with production and music like his. Davis earned a total of five Grammy Awards and was credited with helping to launch or revive the careers of countless artists across many genres like rock, pop, R&B, and hip-hop. His impact on the music world and business has extended far beyond individual artists, helping shape the sound of American music for generations.

According to reports, Davis died Monday, 6/22, at his home in New York City. He had recently been hospitalized with an upper respiratory infection. A cause of death has not been publicly announced.
