Op-ed: The Best Face Sunscreen And Its Dupes

As someone who is a skincare aficionado, finding the perfect sunscreen to complete one’s daily routine is crucial in order to fully protect your precious skin from sun damage. While the piercing sun rays are intensified in these summer months, sunscreen is just as fundamental as moisturizers and cleansers in your skincare routine year-round. Over recent years as self-care has become more popularized and people are prioritizing their skincare needs, brands have created sunscreen formulas that are designed specifically for facial use in order to enhance the appearance of your skin and provide a barrier from the sun.

Whether you are someone that wears a full face of makeup or not, cream-formulated sunscreens from brands like Neutrogena or Banana Boat are not specifically designed for the face, leaving a slimy or thick coating and a white cast on the skin, as well as an awful base for foundations and concealers. However, the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen completely changes the game and actually makes my skin and makeup look even better than if I only had serum and moisturizer on my skin. The SPF is 40, ensuring that my skin won’t get burned, damaged, or begin to wrinkle prematurely, and the formula feels weightless compared to regular sunscreens. Supergoop also has variations in skin finishes, from a Matte Sunscreen to a Glow Sunscreen, both at 40 SPF as well and completely unscented, allowing you to avoid that trademark sunscreen odor.

The biggest issue with the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is the price point, with the largest bottle of 1.7 ounces sitting at $36. While a little does go a long way with this product, comparatively, an 8-ounce bottle of Banana Boat Sport sunscreen costs $7 on Amazon, making it hard to justify spending that amount of money on a tiny product. However, various discount stores such as Marshall’s and TJ Maxx carry limited quantities of the Unseen Sunscreen at lower prices, with Walmart selling the product online at about $17 apiece.

The grocery store Trader Joe’s has recently released a facial sunscreen with almost identical ingredients to the Supergoop product, but at only $8.99 a bottle. The “Daily Facial Sunscreen” is also 40 SPF and 1.7 ounces, and has been widely praised on the internet as an exact dupe for the Unseen Sunscreen with the same texture, appearance, and protectiveness. The only problem is that Trader Joe’s products are unavailable for online purchase, and the in-store products have been flying off the shelves since their release. The “Kroger Sunscreen Invisible Gel SPF 40” has also been compared to the Supergoop favorite, available on the Kroger website for $10.99.

As we begin to reach the middle of the summer, ensuring that you apply sunscreen as the last step in your morning skincare routine is extremely important for the wellness of your skin and body, and the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is the best and most widely accessible facial sunscreen out there.
