Roy White… A true Yankee and a Gentleman

Roy White is arguably one of the most underrated Major League Baseball players of all time. He is also again arguably the greatest left fielder in NY Yankees history. He was definitely the bridge between The great Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris and the dynasty of the 60s and Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson and the Dynasty of the 70s. While everyone that came along was being built as the next Joe DiMaggio or Mickey Mantle, Roy White was just being Roy White. In the early seventies when the Yankees were so bad Roy White was so good. He established Yankee records like all-time sacrifice flies and other offensive statistics that quietly stand to this day. When Roy batted from the left side he had such a unique batting stance that thousands of school kids were copying it in all New York school yards. Many true Yankee fans equated Roy to being a modern-day Lou Gehrig… a gentleman who always put the team first. He never ever complained even though he had the right because he didn’t always get his due. He gave the Yankees fifteen quality seasons and actually made two all-star teams during a period when there were so many wonderful and talented players like Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays playing in the big leagues.

Roy is definitely a great Yankee who would not embarrass the Yankee brand by having a plaque on the wall in Monument Park. If it was up to me his famed number six should have been retired before Joe Torre ever had a chance to wear it. But then again what do I know?

One thing I know for sure, Roy White is truly one of my all-time baseball heroes and that of so many kids who came from the streets of New York and were looking for that one Yankee that they could look up to and also emulate.

Today Roy has teamed up with Ken Thimmel to help youth programs and different causes in the tri-state area.
