Smart basketball hoops coming to East Village

‘The Huupe’, a new smart basketball hoop has been installed at Tompkins Square Park. The founders Paul Anton and Lyth Saeed accompanied Sue Donoghue, the NYC Parks Commissioner, to cut the ribbon yesterday afternoon. They invited some local children to come to learn about this new technology and be the first to play on the hoop.

Advanced technology tracks players’ analytics, including showing the shooters their percentage as they shoot. Users can also download their app to connect with and challenge other players worldwide.

Paul Anton says he wanted to bring his product to the mecca of basketball and give back to a place that means so much to the sport. “We really wanted to give this to the largest city in the country and New York has always a been a place that’s embraced basketball and has moved the game forward”, he said in an interview with ABC news.

The park plans to keep the ‘The Huupe’ up until October when they will take it down to avoid it being exposed to winter conditions.

Huupe devices are available for purchase on their website. The 10-foot regulation size sells for $9,995. They also have a mini model to hang inside which is priced at $599.
