A Spirit Airlines plane landing at Hartsfield-Jackson International airport in Atlanta on
Sunday morning briefly caught fire on the runway when one of its landing gear breaks
overheated and started to release smoke.
First responders in the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department hosed off the aircrafts tires, and
managed to put out the fire which was ignited at 9:25 a.m. Passengers from Flight 383
from Tampa, Florida were able to safely get off the plane. According to Spirit
spokesman Erik Hofmeyer, there were no injuries.
“Spirit Flight 383 from Tampa to Atlanta landed safely in Atlanta International Airport
and upon landing one of the brakes overheated,” Spirit said in a statement on Sunday.
The experience caused many passengers to become concerned while on board. A
passenger posted a video online of passengers being told by the flight crew to remain
seated, and that they did not have to evacuate.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the plane is being temporarily not being
used and being taken in for maintenance. Hofmeyer reported that Spirit will bring in a
replacement plane for the next flight that the aircraft was due to fly.
