Storms to Bring Heavy Rain to East Coast

Forecasters are warning of heavy storms set to hit the East Coast later today, Thursday July 31. This comes after a long stretch of record high temperatures. They say the storm is fueled by tropical moisture and is expected to bring intense rainfall to major cities in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the US. This raises concerns for flash flooding and travel disruptions the rainfall will cause.

The affected areas include the Interstate 95 corridor from Washington D.C. to New York City, including the major cities of Baltimore and Philadelphia. Steady downpours set to occur from later this evening into the night could lead to dangerous road conditions. Surrounding suburbs of these areas are also at risk, with flooding possibly in low lying neighborhoods and highways. The storm is expected to continue until early tomorrow morning, Aug 1.

Meteorologists predict the widespread rainfall totals to be between one and three inches, with a possibility of some areas receiving a higher amount. In some spots, the intense downpowers could lead to an accumulation of five to eight inches, happening in the rapid speed of within just a few hours. That level of rainfall poses a risk for flash flooding.

Forecasters warn of potentially hazardous travel conditions, particularly during rush hours. The risk of flash flooding could make roads dangerous with little to no warning, and officials are urging drivers to avoid flooded areas and to not make attempts to cross deep sitting water. Several counties have already issued flash flood warnings and are asking residents to monitor weather alerts for updates.

This potential threat of rain and flooding should urge people along the East Coast to stay alert and take precautions. Conditions may change quickly, and updates will be made by local authorities and the National Weather Service.
