Avatar 2: The Way of Water has come out, and critics are not happy. The sequel film to the original Avatar movie is facing calls for a boycott over its alleged “appropriation” of indigenous and African cultures. The film, a sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 smash hit Avatar, focuses on the Na’vi, the blue-skinned inhabitants of an alien planet called Pandora.

The inclement weather won’t keep Avatar: The Way of Water out of the spotlight this holiday season. According to the most recent global box office report, the eagerly awaited sequel is close to reaching the $900 million milestone. The harsh Storm Elliott is making it difficult and even impossible in certain locations to see a holiday movie at the North American box office, but “Avatar 2” nonetheless astounded analysts with its most recent global ticket sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.
Will the New Avatar be Successful?
The long awaited second Avatar movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, will be released to theaters this month on December 16th. The movie will need to make 2 billion dollars in box office sales in order for Disney, the producer of the movie, to break even.
The original movie made 2.9 billion dollars in box office sales when it was released in 2009. When adjusted for inflation the movie would have made 3.5 billion dollars in 2022, meaning that if Avatar: The Way of Water performs as well as the original movie it will easily gross the 2 billion dollars necessary to break even. Nevertheless, the question remains, will Avatar: The Way of Water perform as well as the original.
