Wakanda Forever: How Black Panther Examines the Complexity of Grief in the Black Community
If you’re anything like me, you flock to the movie theater every time a new Marvel movie hits the box office. Naturally, I flew to the movie theater when Black Panther was released in 2018. Being able to see Black people wearing traditional Kente clothing and African wear, embodying the spirit of Wakanda, and being unapologetically Black was both exhilarating and liberating. Seeing black children being able to finally see a superhero that looks like them brought me joy. The film also demonstrated the potential, bravery, and tenacity of Black women, such as Princess Shuri, which ignited my “Black girl nerd.” Seeing a film that depicted Black excellence was refreshing in a world where so much of our experience is told through the lens of oppression and death.
American Propaganda In the MCU
Growing up in the United States meant that Marvel movies were inescapable. Even as a young girl who was more inclined towards Mean Girls and the Princess Diaries, I watched every Captain America and Iron Man movie. Much like Marvel movies, Americans grow up bombarded with positive messages about the American military and are often encouraged to offer their bodies up to be American heroes themselves.

In an interview, the reality TV star Kim Kardashian admitted that she would be interested in joining the Marvel Universe. This would not be the first time the famous Kardashian appeared on the big screen. She recently appeared as a voice actor in the 2021 kids movie PAW Patrol: The Movie and her acting credits don’t stop there. She was also a part of the 2013 movie Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, along with the 2008 Disaster Movie.
Upcoming Marvel TV Shows in MCU Phase 5
Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. began premiering in 2012 as the first Marvel TV series, there have now been 21 different shows produced by Marvel Television and Marvel Studios. With programs on ABC, Netflix, Hulu, Freeform, and most recently Disney+, the MCU has been seriously expanding their universe away from solely movies, and creating spinoff shows with secondary characters as well as some new ones. The release of Wandavision in 2021 was the first series that incorporated a character that also integrated into the mainstream Marvel multiverse, with some of the Disney+ Marvel series now being considered as part of the “phase” rollouts that the MCU is known for.
‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Didn’t Do As
Expected
Before its release, fans were excited to see what else Marvel had in store for them. The famous Norse God is back, and he has Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thore and Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie to help him out through his adventure. Unfortunately, it seems like fans were let down after watching the film, calling it too “childish” and falling short against its predecessor, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’
First Reactions to “Thor: Love and Thunder”
With the next Marvel movie “Thor: Love and Thunder” set to release on July 8th in theaters nationwide, movie critics have gotten a first watch of this film, which is already set to explode at the box office, at its Hollywood premiere last Thursday. This will be the fourth Thor-centered film that Marvel has created, following “Thor” in 2011, “Thor: The Dark World” in 2013, and “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017. After the 5 year Covid hiatus that pushed back the release dates of many highly-anticipated films, fans are anxious to see if “Thor: Love and Thunder” is better than the latest film “Thor: Ragnarok,” which boasts a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

When Disney announced that they would release Marvel shows exclusively on Disney+, fans of the successful cinematic universe were hesitant about whether or not it would work. Disney has gone under fire for “ruining” other movie franchises in hopes of gaining revenue. Most notably, the Star Wars franchise. However, it wasn’t until the release of the show Wandavision that fans began to see the scope and overall storytelling talent that Disney has to offer.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Earns More Than $187M Opening Week Becoming Third Highest Grossing Movie of the Year
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came ahead of Disney’s $185M week projection with over $187M after a $39M Sunday. The film’s director, Sam Raimi, says that it’s the best opening since 2007, the start of Spiderman 3, which did $151M.
Bad Bunny to Star in Spiderman Spin-Off
Announced on Monday afternoon, Bad Bunny will play El Muerto, a supernatural superhero luchador, in a Spider-Man spinoff. Sony, the studio producing the film, announced that it is set to be released on January 12, 2024. It will be following last year’s sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage which starred Tom Hardy. Additionally, Sony also confirmed a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
