In recent years, there has been an increase in collaborations between the Baseball industries in the United States and Japan. Baseball is no stranger to players from other countries entering leagues like MLB, including Latin American countries like the Dominican Republic. That said, out of all countries, Japanese baseball player participation in American baseball spiked the most.
The amazing accomplishments of Japanese Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani are the biggest case for this movement. Ohtani has continued shattering baseball records, quickly becoming one of the best players in sports history. Unsurprisingly, more American baseball teams are looking to recruit players from Japan, a country that has grown to love baseball as much as, if not more than, the United States.
The increased interest from MLB in Japan has many wondering whether MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) would merge. It’s safe to say that a merger is unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Instead, collaborations will likely continue, since they are already happening via the Player Transfer System, which allows Japanese players to negotiate contracts with MLB teams. Additionally, there would be an increase in coverage of MLB games within Japan to court a Japanese viewership, helped by these Japanese players playing.
Outside of the MLB, there has been a surprising amount of engagement from Japanese viewers towards Banana Ball, following the Savana Banana’s first-ever live broadcast with Japanese commentary this past August. Thousands of viewers watched the broadcast despite it airing at 8:00 AM local time.
