Richard Block dies

Professor of Cinematic Arts at USC and former president of Kaiser Broadcasting, Richard Block has passed away. Block passed away due to unknown causes on September 30th with the news not becoming public until this weekend. He was 97.

Known as “Dick”, Block had a very big role in the entertainment business. He developed a strategy to establish independent TC stations in seven large markets. He eventually became EVP of Metromedia’s TV station inking a deal with CNN. His success in the business cannot be overstated as he did so much to change several parts of the TV industry.

In addition to his work, Block served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during the Second World War. He also was a part of the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War in the 1950s.

Some of Block’s loved ones shared part of Richard’s obituary. “The entertainment industry lost a great leader and consummate teacher. His impact on the entertainment business is legendary. His easy, can-do manner, dry wit, and fearless pursuit of opportunity drove his remarkable career which spanned nearly seven decades of broadcasting innovations, adroit deal-making, and education.”

There will be a celebration of life at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. More information can be found by contacting dblockmemorial@gmail.com.
