Jazz, Bees, Grizzlies, Warriors – Utah have names that steer towards interesting. When you think about each of their names – they don’t correspond or make you think of the famed Salt Lake City. So, this next team name will make you perplexed when you start to hear it around sports circles.
Smith Entertainment Group announced it’s NHL’s franchise new name as – the Mammoths. The name comes from the animal’s origin in the state of Utah eons ago. Many mammoth fossils have been found around the state. This was spearheaded from an over one year process that included countless rounds of fan voting and about 800,00 ballots cast.
Originally called the Utah Hockey Club, only as a temporary beginning from April 2024. The team’s colors are rock black, salt white, and mountain blue. Colors that remain unchanged from Year 1. The white away jerseys have a UTAH stair step design as an ode to the state’s history and heritage.
Now that it’s explained, it’s best to know the other names. Apparently fans voted for names such as Outlaws, Wasatch, Yeti, Venom, and Blizzard. However, due to fears of copyright issues and potential lawsuits – the board picked Mammoths as it had a nice ring to it.
Overall, hopefully the team lives up to its massive namesake. The Mammoths have already attained the second draft lottery this past Monday, moving to the No. 4 pick. So, the team is hoping to find the perfect player that can adorn their black Mammoth jerseys.
