As the years have gone by, I have noticed a significant number of people I have met were often low on energy and very sluggish. It’s an observation that seemed to extend to both young and old people alike, with only a few outliers that I can think of. With people being stressed over various things and not getting proper shuteye, it seems that Americans are having a tough time sleeping.
Gallup ran a poll that seems to support this, with more than half of the participants saying that they need more sleep. There is a significant drop between 2013 and 2023 in people who get eight or more hours of sleep each night. The body requires a certain amount of rest to fully reenergize the following day. People who only get a few hours will not operate to their fullest and might experience issues such as drowsiness, hallucinations, difficulties with retaining information, heart issues, etc.
The cause for this sudden increase in sleep deprivation is linked to the increasing amount of stress that Americans are facing. The cost of living is incredibly high right now and the things that a person must do to keep their head above water are stressful. There is also a connection to be seen with screen time and how that plays in keeping people up. People need to get better sleep if they want to improve their health and prepare for every day.
If your head is racing with thoughts at night, try listening to calm music to settle your nerves. Instead of watching TV before bed, do things like reading to give your eyes a rest from the screens. In the end, it is up to us to provide ourselves with what our bodies need.
