Let’s be real … the final results of the New York City mayoral race were not a shocker. Between Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani, the latter knocked it out of the park with better marketing and a clear vision. Cuomo has a history of controversies, most notably the sexual harassment allegation that led to his resignation in 2021. A tough incident to have voters potentially back you after ten years. This is where we get the arrival of Mamdani, a candidate that is ready to initiate a new era of politics.
Zohran Mamdani is looking to be a strong candidate for mayor. The Democratic socialist has made waves with young audiences. Offering mental health services and outreach workers. He has stood up for Palestinian human rights and criticized Israel for their genocidal tendencies in the conflict.
In addition, his agenda further includes free city bus service, free child care, government-run grocery stores, a rent freeze for people living in rent-regulated apartments and new affordable housing. The latter aimed to raise taxes for the rich and wealthy. Which is honestly a positive, humane thing to do. The fact that this has matched his grassroots philosophy, where he walked the length of Manhattan all while greeting fellow New Yorkers, showcases that he not only wants to be heard but felt.
Many billionaires, such as Trump and even those from Mamdani’s political party, are calling him the worst nightmare. Some have gone to appalling lengths to vocally have him deported. An insane reaction, but that did not stop Zohran Mamdani’s win over Andrew Cuomo this past Tuesday. So clearly, it appears that the people are not succumbing to Trump’s ramblings.
In the end, this reaction proves that Mamdani is moving in the right direction. In terms of love from the youth, he’s honestly a spiritual successor of Bernie Sanders — who has coincidentally shown his support for the hip-hop enthusiast. All jokes aside, Mamdani is providing a safer and less demanding proponent to New York. Something that his critics and haters can’t wrap their heads around but will have to deal with it.
