Sean McDermott Fired

Following the recent loss against the Denver Broncos for the playoff loss in the AFC Divisional Round, head coach, Sean McDermott, was recently fired from the Buffalo Bills.

Working as the head coach for the Buffalo Bills for a total of nine seasons, McDermott helped the team see a total of 98-50, the second most wins of any franchise since 2017. Transforming the struggling team into a strong and respected contender in the football franchise, McDermott famously lead the bills into eight playoff appearances between 2017 and 2025.  However, despite the consistent success for the team, the bills sadly said goodbye to their beloved coach on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026.

The ultimate decision to let the coach go was due to the fact that McDermott reportedly did not accomplish what he originally promised to achieve for the team.  As stated in a report by ESPN, McDermott was let go due to his inability to accomplish his shared goal with GM Brandon Beane in leading the team into winning their first Super Bowl, originally promised by McDermott in 2024.

“The firing comes down to what McDermott didn’t do,” reports the ESPN article.  “Beane and McDermott together were not accomplishing the combined goal in leading the football side of the team, and that’s winning the franchise’s first Super Bowl or even reaching the big game.”

Moving forward, the co-owner of the Buffalo Bills, Kim Pegula released a statement that reported in the future the bills will proceed with a singular coach instead of two, which she believes will benefit the team.  As stated in ESPN, “Pegula made clear in his statement that he believes that the organizational structure was not the most effective, and that giving just one person — Beane — control of the entire football operation is the best move to try to reach a Super Bowl title,” reported Bills reporter Alaina Getzenberg.

Will this prove true for the success of the team?  Only time will be able to tell what lies ahead of the Bills.
