What James Talerico’s Election Says About Democratic Politician Electability

The recent win of Texas Democrat James Talerico in the Texas Senate primary made waves across both Democratic and Republican parties within the United States. The win preceded a fierce competition between Talerico and the other popular candidate, Jasmine Crocket. While many within online left spaces wanted Crocket to win, Talerico was the winner, which left many stunned.

The discussion and debate continued far after Talerico’s win, with many debating why he won over Crocket, from campaign management to how often black female politicians are looked over compared to their white counterparts. While these reasons all have their valid truths, one of the largest reasons for Talerico’s seems to be a precursor for the entire Democratic party and how they may have to operate in the future.

In previous elections, putting opposing Donald Trump at the forefront of Democratic election campaigns used to be the winning ticket. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case anymore. Talerico focused more on class solidarity across all isles, focusing on combating the extensive measures billionaires put out that harm the average voter. More importantly, his stance on Israel and the conflict in Gaza seemed to be the most important.

Unlike Crocket, who did accept money from AIPAC, Talerico explicitly stated that he wouldn’t accept AIPAC money and called out and spoke out against the violence inflicted on the citizens in Palestine. The younger voting bloc out of all previous generations is the most anti-Israel when it comes to its conflict with Palestine in American history. Additionally, they have also been the most focused on wanting future candidates to have initiatives to get the United States out of foreign wars and from billionaires raking in more money.

For the Democratic Party to succeed in the future, candidates will need to have firm stances like that of Talerico, which focuses on bettering the lives of its citizens and gets things done across the aisle. Divisiveness had its time in the sun.
