Wesley Wales Anderson, better known as Wes Anderson, is an American filmmaker known for his unique visual and narrative styles. His distinctive style has taken on a life of its own, inspiring online trends like “Accidentally Wes Anderson”, where users share photos that would be right at home in one of his films.
Anderson was born on May 1, 1969, in Houston, Texas. He met actor Owen Wilson while in college, and the two, along with Owen’s brother Luke, would work together on Anderson’s first film, Bottle Rocket, released in 1996. That same year, he founded his production company, American Empirical Pictures. Anderson’s catalogue features many iconic films, like The Darjeeling Limited (2007), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Asteroid City (2023), and his most recent movie, The Phoenician Scheme, was released in 2025. Anderson’s work has often featured his brother Eric’s artwork and designs.
Anderson has been nominated and won for awards including Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, Imagine Film Festival’s Silver Scream Award, and Independent Spirit Awards. He won the Best Live Action Short Academy Award for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar in 2024. He won a BAFTA for Best Orginal Screenplay for The Grand Budapest Hotel. His work has also won internation awards such as the Berlin Internation Film Festival’s Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize.
