Across the internet and recent news, many different media outlets have covered the recent news that there will be a film centered around the January 6th attack. If you are unaware, the January 6th attack is an historic riot that dates back to when a violent mob of President Trump supporters attacked and swarmed the U.S. Capitol, while Congress was in session.
Overpowering the police barricades, the mob notoriously forced its way into the U.S. Capital was a violent and dangerous attempt to protest the results of the 2020 election. During the attack, about 140 people were injured, with seven to nine people sadly losing their lives as a consequence of the attack.
And now there is Hollywood talk that director Sean Penn is set to direct a drama depicting the events of the film, with actor Bradly Cooper rumored to star. In a recent article depicted in Variety, the film is confirmed to be held by Warner Bros., describing the untitled film as “an unexpected story about friendship”.
However, with the current political climate of our nation, this film could not come at a worse time. With ICE Immigration, the war conflict with Iran, and the rocketing of prices across the economy, the Americas are not only divided from one another but have additionally grown distant from the government as well. And depicting a film that focuses heavily on ongoing issues such as division, distrust, and distance presents controversy and debate for the future.
Such issues that the film will depict are issues we have not forgotten or moved away from in 2026. In fact, despite the attack taking place in 2021, we as a nation have not moved on from such divisions. We are sadly still in the mess of the aftermath!
And presenting a film that, at its core, depicts America as divided and angry, to a nation that is still divided and angry, does not bode well for the future. Especially for a catastrophic and deadly attack that is still very much real for many Americans, it just seems in poor taste.
