Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Primary

Change is once again on the horizon within American politics as progressive Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan’s Democratic primary. This success eerily echoes many of the reactions to current NYC mayor Zohran Mamdani’s win in last year’s New York City Democratic Primary. While not winning by a major margin, El-Sayed’s success legitimizes claims about the future of American politics and the Democratic Party as a whole.

Now more than ever, progressive politics have a chance to have real political seats. In past years, progressive politics were seen as too unrealistic to be electable or too wrapped up within the lengthy fearmongering campaigns against socialism and communism within the United States.

However, politicians like Zohran Mamdani, El-Sayed, and others have opened a gateway that allows the American people to have tangible and upfront examples of progressive politics at work. However, what drew voters towards politicians like El-Sayed was how outspoken he was about his values and how he tapped into the frustrations many Americans have with establishment democrats.

Voters, especially within Millennials and Gen Z, have been hotly upfront about their distaste for the constant compromises establishment democrat politicians like Haley Stevens, Chuck Schumer, and Hakeem Jeffries have made towards billionaires, companies, and their campaign money.

However, the largest topic that El-Sayed landed with voters was his criticism of the lobbying group AIPAC and funding for Israel in general. Israel has always been an important topic within American politics; however, an increasing number of younger Americans on both sides of the political aisle have been either distancing support for the country or outright rejecting it. For the establishment democratic party, this foreshadows a reckoning that is fast approaching. As more and more politicians like El-Sayed gain support, seasoned Democrats will have to decide whether their continued support for Israel will remain the party standard in the future.
