The world of politics has always been a volatile place; there’s no denying that. People get so vitriolic over the ideas they think should shape the world around them, and with our two-party system, they subscribe to one side or the other; anything else is just putting their beliefs towards nothing.
Every time our congress votes on a bill, it’s always Democrats versus Republicans in any state or on a federal level. No matter what they vote on, it’s never a unanimous vote.
A prime example would be May 2026’s Senate bill to ban child marriage. You might expect that a legal ban on the predatory act of child marriage would receive unanimous support due to the significant “protect the children” movement associated with internet censorship; however, the vote resulted in 51 in favor and 36 against. Republican House members cast all 36 “no” votes. Why? Because of asinine reasons like “government overreach” and “parental rights.” We have a whole movement focused on protecting children in bathrooms, on the internet, and in other areas, but why is it suddenly a problem when Democrats also want to protect children?
In February 2026, West Virginia proposed a bill to ban bestiality that resulted in a 93-1 vote. The law would have sentenced violators to 1-5 years in a correctional facility and imposed a $1,000-5,000 fine. Only one Republican voted no. No official reason was stated for the vote against the bill.
These things are what bother me about Congress. They have to oppose each other, but they never say why. You can’t agree with the opponent; they’re wrong! These people are part of state-level governments that lead millions, but they’re all so petty over who makes what law. Some people will prevent progress for the sake of preventing it, even if the bill is something that should have been established decades ago.
They should be setting a positive example of political maturity for everyone else, but they propagate this asinine red versus blue war instead of functioning as governing bodies.
It’s blind opposition; there’s no legitimate reason behind these congress squabbles. These conflicts arise simply because each side fears that the other may gain power over them. We need to do better, but I doubt we ever will.
