The current landscape of world politics is one of constant crisis for many countries financially and economically. The people who are supposed to serve as representatives and leaders of the people of their states, nations, and countries. These leaders lie and have consistently been seen giving false information.
Political figures and world leaders should be held to high standards of accountability. Holding these people accountable for the lies they tell balances the rule of law with the realities of democratic governance. Politicians and world leaders should face strict accountability for breaking the law and misleading the public.
To put this simply: Politicians are citizens first and must be subject to the law just as you and I. And yet these leaders in these countries and politicians that represent their people lie, take bribes, commit fraud, and commit crimes against humanity all the time without penalty, being treated as if they are above the law altogether.
They will purposefully spread false information or break major campaign promises just because they feel like there is no repercussion for their actions. And due to the difficulty of being prosecuted for these actions, they will continue to freely do it while facing consequences.
There are several reasons why politicians aren’t accountable for these things due to several legal protections. One of these legal protections is the First Amendment, one of the laws that these politicians hate and want to get rid of so badly. Free speech simply doesn’t allow for these people to be held accountable at all, with these lies being labeled as “normal” in politics. The power and influence to be above the law is insane, and these politicians manipulate and use schemes like political polarization to make their actions look less unlawful to supporters.
All we can do as citizens of these nations, not just the US, is to come together and go through the lawful and legal ways we can for change, voting out these dishonest and not well-meaning politicians, engaging in proper checks of balance with local governments, and publicly engaging with peaceful protest and attending local government meetings.
