In school there is usually, in the United States at least, a football team, and a basketball team. And those teams, usually are played by people who can run, jump, throw, basically anything a player needs to be able to do. But what about the ones that were born different? They want to play sports but can’t because they run slowly, or can’t jump because they use crutches or a wheelchair.
That is why schools need a separate team for these types of students. Let them have their own team name, jersey, equipment and let them get the same love and praise that the other team gets. If there would have been a team for people who struggled with asthma, or other disabilities in school I might have joined. I went to so many football games to cheer for my classmates and it would have been nice to know how it felt to hear the cheers from the other end.
There are so many people that would get to experience the love and proudness of classmates cheering in the stands if they had access to adaptive sports. People with asthma like me, someone using crushes that can’t run or jump, it would be hard to figure out what sport fits the right people. But it would encourage students to try something new that they thought that they would never be able to do.
Especially if you got hurt or something that you couldn’t prevent, such as a sickness or an accident, everyone needs a chance. But it’s not only physical disabilities that need to be adaptive, hidden disabilities such as autism or adhd, need adaptive sports too. Maybe having low lights, and the cheers to be less loud and overwhelming. Or something to show the cheering without having the cheering.
All disabilities need to be seen as adaptive, you shouldn’t be discouraged to try something new because you are different and you shouldn’t be turned away from it either. In the end, making schools have adaptive sports will bring everyone together and make it a better community for the disabled.
