Hasan Piker, a Socialist online political streamer, has once again appeared in the mainstream spotlight. His controversial comments surrounding 9/11 landed him in hot water with establishment democrats, who have been calling on upcoming political candidates to join in condemning the streamer.
Unfortunately, this condemnation wasn’t entirely well received amongst voters, particularly younger people. Hasan, whether you love him or hate him, has an unavoidable presence among young American voters, especially those who are left-leaning. Despite how notorious infighting can be in online left-leaning spaces, this recent controversy has led people who would normally despise Hasan to feel forced to defend him.
The optics surrounding serious tragedies like 9/11 are vastly different for younger generations compared to older ones who were old enough to experience and remember the impact of these moments. It’s similar to the divide of opinion on Israel between younger and older generations, and for many people, Hasan Piker has become a figurehead for these viewpoints.
That could be the very reason so many politicians on the establishment democrat side are so eager to go after Hasan. Hasan represents the fact that these views are not as fringe as they want to believe and are, in fact, growing in such popularity that many left-leaning voters are actively seeking out candidates that follow progressive and socialist viewpoints and are not willing to compromise.
Instead of condemning and pushing these viewpoints away, establishment democrats may have to come face to face with these viewpoints and actually have the hard discussions about them and what that means for the party’s future. Otherwise, as the younger generations reach voting age, establishment democrats may soon find themselves replaced.
