Cindy Sherman is an American photographer that specializes in photographic self-portraits. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Sherman grew up in Long Island as the youngest of five children. While she started her journey with art in painting, and drawing, during her time at Buffalo State University, she transitioned into photography.

 

Sherman’s photography centers around herself encompassing different personas, often female stereotypes from different in her early work. Her work often acts as social commentary on feminity and gender roles. In the modern age, Sherman she incorporates digital tools like filters into there pieces.

 

Outside of her own personal work, Sherman has collaboration with fashion brands like Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Marc Jacobs to work on advertisements. She has also collaborated with music artists and filmmakers and even released her own movie Office Killer in 1997.

 

Many in the contemporary art field consider Sherman as one of the most influential artists in for contemporary self portraits.
