Reggaeton Artist of the Month for May 2026
José Álvaro Osorio Balvín, who performs as J Balvin, is a famous reggaeton artist. He is one of the highest-selling Latin artists, with over 35 million worldwide record sales. Balvin was born in Medellín, Colombia, on May 7, 1985. As a young adult, he moved to New York City to study music following a student exchange program. Balvin released his first song in 2004, Panas. He was then signed with EMI Colombia a few years later.
Balvin would continue to release music, including the single Ella Me Cautivó, which landed on the Billboard Tropical Songs Chart at #35. Balvin has released 7 albums, including La Famila (2013), Energía (2016), Vibras (2018), Colores (2020), Jose (2021), Rayo (2024), and Mixteip (2025). He has also worked closely with other popular Latin artists, including collaborating on the album Oasis with Bad Bunny.
Balvin and his work have been recognized for increasing the popularity of Latin music worldwide, earning him the first Lo Nuestro Global Icon Award. He also has earned 11 Billboard Latin Music Awards, 6 Latin Grammys, 5 MTV Video Music Awards, and 7 Latin American Music Awards. In fact, with 13 Latin Grammy nominations in 2020, Balvin earned a Guinness World Record for the most in a single year.
