As one of the largest social media platforms at the moment, TikTok is revolutionizing the music industry, with the most recent smash hit being Nicki Minaj’s new single ‘Super Freaky Girl,’ which samples Rick James’s ‘Super Freak’ from the 80s. On July 12th, Nicki posted a risqué video on TikTok with a snippet of her new song, which skyrocketed it to popularity on the app as creators choreographed a dance to it. While most musicians will release teasers of new music in order to build excitement from fans, the ‘Super Freaky Girl’ sound on TikTok has almost 200,000 videos featuring the song, resulting in an insane amount of streams after the official release on August 12th.
Now, only four days after ‘Super Freaky Girl’ dropped on Apple Music, Spotify, and all other streaming platforms, it has become the largest solo debut for a female artist’s rap song in Spotify history as well as #1 on the iTunes Top Songs chart for the US. Currently, the rap hit has over 12 million streams on Spotify and continues to increase every minute, with ‘Super Freaky Girl’ being Nicki Minaj’s first solo single since the release of ‘Megatron’ in 2019.
Nicki has been extremely active on TikTok and Twitter, interacting with her fans and sharing her appreciation for their constant love and support as well as their adoration for her new song. However, some have criticized Minaj for making music now that only panders to the TikTok audience, with Nicki clapping back saying “You dunce cap wearing ugly duckling I’m an obsession to you pieces of dirt. That’s why we breaking records now! Thank y’all so much chi.” Fans have also spoken up about the hate artists receive when their songs go viral on TikTok, with one Barb saying “She cannot help if her songs are so good that the people on TikTok want to use them.”
The MTV VMAs are approaching on Sunday, August 28, and anticipation is building from Nicki fans as she is set to perform her new hit single for the first time at the awards show.
