Nurses Arrested Amidst Strikes

The New York City nurses strike has been going on for about four weeks now, with the initial walk-out beginning on January 12, 2026. Today, February 6, 2026, marks the 26th consecutive day that nurses from three major hospital systems within New York City have been on strike. While negotiations have been attempted, a successful deal between hospital executives and the nurses has not been made at this point.

On February 5, 2026, protests occurred within the strike outside the League of Voluntary Hospitals in the city. They gathered at this location to protest the hospital executives’ response to the walkout, and how management has handled the strike as a whole. This was an action against the executives overseeing the negotiations made by the hospital systems. Nurses blocked the entrance to the building, not allowing individuals to enter the building. The NYPD stated they had made several requests toward the nurses asking them to leave the scene and allow people through the entryway.

Police called to the scene wore riot gear, which also included units from the city’s Strategic Response Group. Thirteen nurses were arrested at the protest due to not leaving the scene or not following police directions. Mayor Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch carried out these arrests and deployed law enforcement to the scene.

The thirteen individuals arrested were given a summons for civil disobedience and were released from police custody shortly after arrest. They have stated they are “negotiating in good faith” and will continue to strike until the deal is fair to both the hospital systems and the nurses themselves.

Today, February 6, 2026, the NYC nurses strike entered its 26th consecutive day. Tentative agreements are beginning to be reached within the negotiations, but the strike continues this Friday morning.
