Sen. Thom Tillis Will Not Seek Reelection

North Carolina Senator, Thom Tillis, recently announced he will not seek reelection at the end of his term in 2026. This decision comes after a public disagreement with President Donald Trump over a spending bill.

Tillis has represented North Carolina in the Senate since 2015, after winning the election in 2014 and securing reelection in 2020. He is known in the GOP as a more moderate Republican, as he supports bipartisan immigration efforts and more gun control – both opinions that stray from party leadership.

He recently sparked controversy by voting against advancement for Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.” He cited the reasoning being Medicaid cuts, which he claims will disproportionately harm North Carolina. Trump took to social media to attack Tillis in his vote, saying that he would support any other Republican candidate if Tillis seeked reelection.

With his announcement, Tillis cited a growing lack of bipartisan leadership in Congress. He said: “Leaders willing to work across the aisle are becoming an endangered species.” He also cited personal reasons ultimately claiming that it wasn’t a hard choice.

Tillis’ departure sets North Carolina up for an intense race in a key battleground state. Republicans may support Michael Whatley or Lara Trump, while Democrats eye potential bids from Rep. Wiley Nickel or former Governor Roy Cooper. Either way, with the Senate majority up for grabs, this will be a crucial and key race.

North Carolina is expected to be a tight race in 2026. Both parties are preparing for a costly and highly competitive election cycle. A win there might be the deciding factor for control of the chamber.
