Why 90s Fashion Was Surprisingly Neurodivergent-Friendly

I loved the 90s, but I especially loved the fashion. The baggy clothes, flannels, and my all-time favorite shoe brand, Etnies. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had autism, and well, the clothes in that era were perfect for me. I loved wearing my mom’s too-big-for-me sweatshirts or jeans that had rips in them(on purpose!)

The best place to find these types of clothes, even today, is Hot Topic. If you like grunge, emo, or goth-like aesthetics, this was the store for you. The grunge look, mismatched and disheveled, was heavily inspired by Nirvana. Then there were the baggy cargo pants and the oversized graphic tees

Autistics thrived with these because the clothing didn’t stick to us, the baggy jeans were loose enough to run around and not be uncomfortable, and the oversized graphic tees made getting dressed for the day that much more bearable. I want to bring back this fashion because the neurodivergent kids these days are just uncomfortable with the tags and the tight pants, and it’s just unpleasant.

I own tons of graphic T-shirts about video games, anime, and various other TV shows. The bigger the shirt, the better I feel in it, even if it is like wearing a dress. I even would wear my mom’s clothes to sleep in because it was comfortable, and to this day, we share clothes because we are the same size.

In the 90s, we didn’t get a lot of clothes that were silky or wool, and those two are a neurodivergent’s nightmare. I can’t wear wool clothes because it’s very itchy, and silky clothes are just as bad because I feel like its going to slip off of me. The clothes that were my favorite were oversized and cotton. To this day, I always need cotton.

Shoes are weird for me, too. I loved skateboarding shoes such as Etnies because they were made for wider feet. Overall, the 90s fashion was amazing, and I would love for it to come back. The 90s were an amazing era, and I am so glad I grew up in that era.
