I think we all know and feel when there is a change of guard underway. People cherish the old times, but when a new standard is set, the tides start to shift.
Mainstays get replaced and newcomers take the reins. It hurts but it’s inevitable and it’s a concept that is especially common in the world of sports. And American Football is up there in this regard.
The New York Giants are currently facing this dilemma as the team has chosen rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart to start over Russell Wilson for Week 4.
The 10-time Pro Bowler and former champion Russell Wilson is near the twilight stage of his career at 36, which explains his struggles throughout the first three weeks of the season. Most notably, the Giants’ Week 3 primetime matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Wilson went 10 of 32 for 160 yards and two interceptions for the loss. Not a good stat for a quarterback. Plus, to make matters worse, Wilson threw several uncatchable passes near the back of the endzone. A point in the game where the New York Giants needed a touchdown.
Although New York Giants Coach Brian Daboll defended Wilson, it seems that the amount of losses are causing Coach Daboll to reevaluate the quarterback situation.
Enter Jaxson Dart. The rookie quarterback put on impressive performances in the NFL preseason. With fresh legs and strong arms, his college days were filled with Dart leading his conference in the NCAA Southeast.
Dart has thrown over 4,000 yards, thrown 29 touchdowns against six interceptions, and run for about 500 yards. A pretty astonishing fact that shows he has experience.
As a 1st Round draft pick, it’s best for him to know that the NFL is a completely different ballgame. He has received a little bit of playing time in the regular season so far.
Yet, the New York Giants believe in his capabilities to take the helm as the team’s next franchise quarterback after Eli Manning.
Although it can be seen as crowning him a bit too early, the New York Giants believe that Jaxson Dart is the future and have high expectations for him.
Week 4 will be the deciding factor if Jaxson Dart is the type of quarterback the New York Giants need.
