“It’s freedom of speech!” “Freedom of expression!” Such thoughts are often echoed and repeated when an individual shares their thoughts and opinions that might be seen as controversial. And why not? If the public responds negatively to such controversial opinions, all that one needs to say it is their right as American citizens to exercise their freedom of speech. Even if such speech is seen as unfavorable. The perfect cover-up.
I express this belief because freedom of speech has become blurred and lost in our modern day. Originally, it was created to protect American freedom from harsh punishments and even death when criticizing the government and people in high power. Additionally, it was created to ensure fair and just treatment of the American citizens. It was not intended to excuse hate speech, like it is so often used in today’s world.
Especially on social media platforms, many people often spread their hate speech and intolerable views all over under the guise that it is freedom of expression. Do you hate women? Post a video that explains why they are inferior. Do you really believe people should be deported on stolen land? Then Instagram is your platform.
All jokes aside, such thoughts and many, many more are reflected all over the internet, but they are excused as freedom of expression. To make sure my message is not lost in this article, allow me to restate my opinion: This is NOT freedom of speech. This is HATE speech under the guise of freedom of expression! Plain and simple.
