Should Parents Have More Say Over School Curriculum?

When I was in high school there we subjects that I had to take in order to graduate that just didn’t make sense to me. For example, I think that some subjects should of been electives, such as P.E, art class and music class. Who wants to take art when they either have no interest in it, or just don’t have the skill in it, or having to take music when you don’t understand how to read music.

When students are forced to do subjects that they have no skill or interest in, that is setting them up for failing. I can understand classes such as math and science are important but how is knowing about government or history of the past going to help get a job in the future unless you go into those as a career.

There are some parents who do not want their children to know about certain subjects, such as specific topics in health class, or being shown clips of a woman having a baby. Or showing gruesome scenes in war movies.

I also think that should be able to enforce accommodations for students who have Adhd, autism or anything else on the neurodivergent spectrum. I know how hard it is to go through high school, failing tests because I was not diagnosed until much later and didn’t get the accommodations that I needed.

However they should not be able to control being taught about mental illiness, because students need to know that it should’t be seen as a failure and that it can happen to anyone and they should know that teachers are there to help them. They should also not be able to control science or math class. And they should not be able to control being taught evolution just because they have different beliefs.

Focusing on life skills classes like budgeting, home mec and taking care of fake babies, as well as math, science and english, will help students succeed and sometimes, having parents have control over some things really will help in the long run.
