The 2009 horror film Jennifer’s Body, directed by Karyn Kusama and written by Diablo Cody, is vastly underrated as well as vastly misunderstood. What on the surface seems like a basic teen slasher film catered to the male gaze is in fact a queer, entirely female-led horror/comedy film that was ahead of its time.
Lady Gaga’s French bulldogs were recovered on Friday after being violently abducted earlier in the week. On Wednesday, February, 24th while Gaga was away in Italy, dog walker Ryan Fischer was accosted and shot while strolling with the pop star’s three dogs in Los Angeles.
Two women have now come forward to accuse third-term New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), 63, of sexual harassment. Both women were once part of his administration. The second woman, Charlotte Bennett, 25, told The New York Times on Saturday that Cuomo initiated extremely inappropriate conversations with her. Bennett described one incident which occurred on June 5, 2020 when the two were alone in his office.
Former President Donald Trump will be speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, headed by the American Conservative Union, in Orlando, Florida this weekend. The conference is set to take place on Sunday, February, 28th, and will be Trump’s first public appearance since leaving the White House and retiring to Palm Beach, Florida.
Filmmaker Ari Aster has become one of the leading names in the horror genre over the last few years. His 2018 feature-length directorial debut, Hereditary (starring Toni Collette), gained universal acclaim and has additionally been hailed as “this generation’s ‘The Exorcist’.”
While Hillary Clinton is no doubt a household name, novelist is one label that we haven’t previously associated with the former presidential candidate and secretary of state. Though Clinton has authored and co-authored many non-fiction books over the years, the mystery novel enthusiast has now teamed up with her friend, New York Times best-selling author Louise Penny, to write a mystery novel of her own.
While the full list of the 2021 Academy Awards nominations has yet to be released, one film that has garnered a lot of Oscar buzz is Nomadland. Written and directed by Chloé Zhao, Nomadland follows a protagonist named Fern (Frances McDormand) who travels throughout the American West in a van after losing her job and her possessions in the Great Recession.
A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit involving sexual misconduct allegations brought against actor-director James Franco, 42. In 2019, two former women students of Franco’s acting school, Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal, filed a lawsuit against the star, stating that he had forced them to engage in “sexually exploitative auditions and film shoots.”
Conservative political commentator and talk show host Rush Limbaugh died on Wednesday following a battle with lung cancer. He had revealed his diagnosis last February. Limbaugh was wildly popular among conservatives and The New York Times writes that he became famous for having “transformed the once-sleepy sphere of talk radio into a relentless right-wing attack machine,
Singer- songwriter Sia’s directorial debut Music, starring 18-year-old Maddie Ziegler, arrived on streaming platforms on February 12th. Music, which is also co-written by Sia, has been generating outrage and backlash for months now, as early as when the first trailer came out in November, as members of the autism community have been criticizing the film’s portrayal of people with autism.
On Saturday, the Senate egregiously voted to acquit Trump of the charge of inciting the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th. Seven Republican senators voted to convict Trump and, while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell did not join them in voting this way, he did however deliver a speech on the Senate floor in which he denounced and criticized former President Trump’s behavior, ultimately holding Trump responsible for the violence.
An upcoming movie that I’m very excited about is Olivia Wilde’s second directorial feature, Don’t Worry Darling. Following her critically acclaimed 2019 directorial debut Booksmart, Wilde announced her plans to direct this psychological thriller in August of 2019. New Line Cinema competed with around eighteen other production companies in a bidding war over the script before winning the role of distributor.
