Athlete of the Month for April 2024

Bio
Giovanny Urshela Salcedo aka Gio Urshela was born in Colombia in 1991. The third baseman began his professional MLB baseball career with the Cleveland Indians, initially signing on as a free agent in 2008 before officially debuting in 2015.

In 2018 the Cleveland Indians traded the 32 year-old to the Toronto Blue Jays, but he wouldn’t stay there for long. After batting 19 games with the Blue Jays he was outrighted to the Buffalo Bisons, a minor league base ball team.

Not too long after, the Blue Jays traded Urshela to the New York Yankees, who officially selected his contract in 2019 to take the role of third baseman in place of  Miguel Andujar, who was recovering from a shoulder injury. During his time with the Yankees, Urshela became their first third baseman to hit a postseason grand slam. Urshela played a total of 43 games with the Yankees, missing time due to a groin injury. During his time in the Yankees Urshela married his long time girlfriend and Colombian journalist Danna Delgado in 2021.

In early 2022 the Yankees traded Urshela to the Minnesota Twins alongside Gary Sanchez. Additionally, 2022 also saw the birth of his daughter. However, his time with the Twins was cut short when he was traded in November to the Los Angeles Angels.  He began their 2023 season as the Angels shortstop but not too long after Urshela was put on the injured list due to a pelvis fracture.

Luckily, it was determined that he wouldn’t need surgery, but his injury ended up with him missing the rest of the season.

In his eight season long career, Urshela has made 608 total hits and 64 home runs.

2024 will see Urshela playing again, this time with the Detroit Tigers.
