Japan Elected a New Prime Minister

In a recent election in Japan, Sanae Takaichi was elected the 104th prime minister of Japan. This is a historic event as Sanae Takaichi is the first female prime minister in the history of Japan. She was elected this last Tuesday, October 21st, after winning the votes of both the upper and lower houses.

Sanae Takaichi is a Japanese Politician who has been involved in Japanese politics since 1993. She was known as a close protégé of the late Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving prime minister of Japan, who was killed by an assassin with an illegal weapon. Takaichi is the president of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the same party as her late mentor.

The views of Sanae Takaichi have been considered conservative or nationalist. She has stated her domestic policy involves more active government spending and continuing the policies of Shinzo Abe, better known as Abenomics. She has also shown support for making changes to Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, which restricts military action to resolve international disputes.

Takaichi has said that she has been deeply influenced by the political beliefs of the former British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. In Japan, like Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi has been called the “Iron Lady”. While the name is mostly based on her similarities to Margaret Thatcher, it also has a double meaning as she is famously a heavy-metal music fan.

Now that Takaichi has been elected to be the prime minister, she will need to announce her new cabinet and go through a formal ceremony at the imperial palace before she officially begins her term. Congratulations to Sanae Takaichi for becoming the 104th Prime Minister of Japan.
