In anticipation of his upcoming album in July, soft rock singer John Mayer has released his first single in nearly two years, “Last Train Home.”
The single released with a music video that premiered on YouTube on Friday. In a vintage-style video, Mayer spends most of his time behind a mic playing a pink guitar, with his band playing alongside him. He is also seen playing a white acoustic guitar in a big, open space in an older-looking building.
Mayer’s newest album, entitled “Sob Rock,” is set to be released July 16, 2021. This is his eighth album and first record since 2017.
In an interview, Mayer describes his take on this upcoming album, saying, “I asked myself, ‘What music makes me feel like everything’s going to be OK?’ It’s the music I listened to growing up in the ‘80s. There’s a security-blanket aspect about that sound that reminds me of a safer time.”
“Last Train Home” is an 80s-inspired single, resembling the soft rock hits of the decade. The single takes a lot of inspiration from the band Toto, so much so that Mayer actually features Toto’s keyboardist and percussionist on the song. You can hear the resemblance to Toto’s biggest hit, “Africa,” throughout the song. Country singer Maren Morris also appears on the track, singing some riffs and harmony at the end of the song. Speaking about Morris’ appearance on the record, Mayer sang her praises, saying “I consider her one of the best musicians and communicators around, and to have her voice on the song is a real honor.”
The music video has 2.5 million views and counting on YouTube after just four days of being released. Fans can watch the music video here.
