“Komi Can’t Communicate” Speaks So Much on Anxiety and Meaningful Friendships

Originally written as a manga, “Komi Can’t Communicate” brought much laughter and enjoyment as an anime series on Netflix. The second season of the show is expected in April 2022. “Komi Can’t Communicate” is about an average high school boy named Hitohito Tadano who wants to avoid standing out in the crowd, he meets a girl named Shouko Komi who is well-loved by the school. Although Komi follows the typical popular girl trope, she struggles to talk to students because she always gets nervous about it.

It is often that popular girls are disliked in popular culture because everyone roots for the underdog to grow and overcome obstacles to reach their goal. When audiences watch Komi, they can’t help but fall in love with her. When Komi was first introduced to the show, her appearance was charming and beautiful. The whole school was awed by her long, black hair, almond eyes, and alpha figure. What frightens some people who encounter her is her stare. Her eyes are the window to her soul and she doesn’t speak at all.

Komi desperately wants to make 100 friends and it shows a relatable, small flaw that some people experience when meeting someone for the first time. She mostly communicates with pen and paper, which provides so much personality when she writes passionately and efficiently. In a way, she encourages her friend Tadano to be confident in himself because he often hides himself away from meeting people. Tadano is a guy who wants to avoid trouble, but in order to help Komi make 100 friends, he needs to talk to people.

Komi is rather unaware of the amazement of her beauty and posture. She is also picky about who is in her close circle despite that she wants to make a lot of friends. The anime presents her as cat-like. Even cat ears magically pop up on Komi’s head to show how excited she is.

The colors of “Komi Can’t Communicate” offer a dreamscape from reality. The show uses cloudy, pleasant tones that match the enlightening melodies of their music. It breaks the stereotype that sometimes when people don’t speak up, it’s not because they don’t like you. This show truly communicates the struggles of someone who cannot speak because they are afraid of making a bad impression or messing up on the spot.

The relationship between Tadano and Komi shares a fantastic look on friendship because it looks past these flaws and encourages others to grow together.d Komi shares a fantastic look on friendship because it looks past these flaws and encourages others to grow.
