An attack against the president, especially at an official event like the White House correspondents’ dinner, would typically have garnered significant outcry and concern from the American public. That said, horse after the incident occurred, instead of outcry, what the Trump administration saw was indifference and speculation from many within the public. While many within the administration are baffled by this result, most would see this response as a long time coming and a product of the American political climate’s evolution over the years.
The overall lack of trust in the government, combined with how chaotic and unpredictable the Trump administration has governed, has been one of the largest contributors to this phenomenon. For many people, even within the MAGA movement, the words of republican polititians and even Trump can’t be fully trusted. Time and time again, since he was reelected, people have found that the promises that were made were never followed through on.
Additionally, many people have equated the correspondent’s dinner attack to the previous attempts on President Trump’s life. While at the time, they represented the serious reality of the growing political violence within the United States, the perception of the event amongst many citizens has changed. Similar to the correspondents’ dinner, many also believe those shootings were staged in an attempt to gain the support and sympathy of his voter base and potential swing voters.
Regardless of the reality of these events, much of the American public has become desensitized to them. Additionally, the poor reputation that much of the American public holds for the Trump administration makes it even harder for any earnest sympathy to be given.
