The Strange Emotional Attachment Players Form With NPCs

Ever play a game where a character dies, and you get weirdly emotional, maybe even cry because you feel like you connected with them? There have been a lot of characters that I have personally related to or even connected with, and I might not have cried, but I was very sad. This goes the same with books, movies, anime, and TV shows as well.

One of the ones that I really felt sad about is The Last of Us when Joel’s daughter died at the very beginning, and you didn’t really get to know her very well, but her death ended up forming the character of Joel, and he went from a lovable father to someone cold and guarded. Then in The Last of Us Part 2, we lose Joel, and that right there, I didn’t really cry, but I was so angry because then Ellie turns into someone cold and guarded and vengeful.

Another game that got me very emotional is The Walking Dead game where Lee Everett dies because of the choice Clementine has to make, which in itself is super sad and emotional, especially because you can run while he dies, or you can shoot him to so he doesn’t turn and that is one of the hardest decisions that you can make.

When you playing through Life is Strange and you, as Max, go through tons of realities over and over trying to save your best friend Chloe, only to find out in the end that you have to choose your home from being destroyed or killing Chloe, the choice is never easy and the bond that you form with her from beginning and the fact she doesn’t judge you for your powers, i you choose her over saving the rest of the world and I did not regret it. It’s like when you have to choose 100 strangers or your family from getting squished by a train, you choose family.

Or in Life is Strange: True Colors your brother dies after being seperated from him for a long time and having to struggle with your powers, that death effects everyone, even all the other NPCs in the world. NPCs sometimes are what makes games great, and when we lose them, it hurts so much
