Washington Football Team To Announce New Name Ahead Of Super Bowl LVI

After announcing in 2020 that they would be dropping their former name, the Washington Redskins, for being an anti-Indigenous slur, the Washington Football Team has remained relatively nameless. For 18 months, they have been referred to as the Football Team. Not very original or exciting, but the team has finally reported that they will be revealing their new name February 2nd, just 11 days before the Super Bowl, live on TODAY.

Co-CEO, Tanya Snyder, said during a podcast last September that the final candidates were Armada, Presidents Brigade, Redhawks, Commanders, RedWolves, Defenders, and Football Team. However, team president, Jason Wright, fought back, stating that Snyder’s names were not, in fact, an official list, and that names involving “wolves” would cause legality issues thanks to trademarks by other teams. Wright was hired in August of 2020 to help with finding a new name for the team. He reassures fans that no matter the name, the team will still have burgundy and gold as their colors.

On their team website, the Washington Football Team has shared an inside look at their rebranding process with its “Making the Brand” video series. The franchise claims they have received over 40,000 submissions from fans spanning 61 different countries and all 50 states. The team is 6-10 this season after playing 2 seasons under their current moniker.
