Before COVID, people would regularly lose Medicaid coverage if they started making too much money to qualify for the program or if they moved out of state or gained healthcare coverage from their employer. When the government suspended these procedures, Medicaid enrollment grew by 23.9% from 2020 to 2022, an increase of 17 million people, according to a 2022 KFF report.

Biden to End Covid National and Public Emergencies in May

The Biden administration plans to end the Covid-19 national and public emergencies in May, the White House announced on Monday. The emergencies are set to expire on May 11. The announcement came in opposition to two House Republican measures to end the emergencies sooner, instead reiterating administration policy and stating that the emergencies have been extended into May. The reason for May is because Republicans’ “abrupt end” would create “wide-ranging chaos and uncertainty throughout the health care system,” according to the White House.

In 2021, record shows that 48,691 homeless people reside in New York City. In January 2020, record shows 1,670 homeless people slept in New York’s subway station. Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul planned on sending social workers to remove homeless people who sleep in the subways. The police will enforce rules in the subway station such as not allowing someone to take on multiple seats.
