As someone who is asexual, the Equality Act is a blessing. I get discriminated against by the general public, and as soon as I mention I am asexual, they either insult me or jump to conclusions about what it means. The act helps me be protected from people in the workplace and other public areas based on my sexual identity. Before the act was proposed, it was against the law to be gay, and the majority of the world thought it was a choice rather than being born, which I find ridiculous because I don’t think anyone would choose to be something that often gets seen as wrong or a sin.
The LGBT+ get harassed enough, so the law protects them from an employer not hiring them because of their sexuality, which really helps. I am sure some jobs still break the law and do not hire someone because they are gay or trans or whatever else, which is not fair, and they should be either fired or punished. I feel like the act should somehow be applied to online communities as well.
It’s heartbreaking to think that they had to make an act to protect people from being harassed or discriminated against just because they are different. Unfortunately, a lot of people, if they don’t understand something, will fight against it. I am happy that gay marriage is now legal, and people don’t have to hide who they love and can show they love someone.
I think that if someone were to break the law for the Equality Act, they should at least serve some jail time. Unfortunately, there are people who are against it, who are in law enforcement or judges who would be against protecting them, which is wrong in so many ways. I just hope that one day the world won’t need laws like this to protect people from being harassed. Nobody deserves to be harassed, especially not the ones who are different just because of the people they are attracted to. The world will be a better place when people realize they can’t control people from loving who they love.
