AI And Its Effect on Politics

With the introduction of artificial intelligence and how prevalent it appears to be in our society, I am afraid of how it will affect our government. Especially since the technology surrounding artificial intelligence is constantly improving, it will one day become impossible to decipher what is real and what is fake. And actually, we’re seeing such things today!

Just yesterday, I was scrolling on social media and was watching a video of Michael Jackson singing on stage just to discover that it was indeed AI. While embarrassed for being fooled by AI content, my shame was quickly replaced with fear for how good and real the video looked until I discovered it was fake. And this left me wondering what it would be like with such technology in politics today?

What would be our future if someone decided to create an AI video with a government official declaring war on another country? Or create a video where the president announces that a missile is coming towards earth at a rapid speed? And please do not think this is an extreme scenario either, as many AI videos are online with different governments officially circulating on the internet. From former president Barack Obama to even current president Donald Trump, many AI videos exist that showcase them doing and saying things they never did.

With this knowledge in mind, it is possible that someone could create an AI video that showcases a government official declaring war on another country. And with AI becoming harder to detect with the naked eye alone, I fear nothing good could come from this. People are already distrustful and wary of the government, and the inclusion of AI would only heighten people’s paranoia.

It almost sounds like something out of a sci-fi book or something. Could you imagine debating whether an announcement is real or not from the government?
