EPA Investigates Possible Civil Rights Violations in Mississippi’s Majority Black Capital

This summer Jackon, Mississippi faced a water crisis when tens of thousands of mostly black households had no access to safe drinking water. In August, Jackson’s main water treatment plant was damaged after a storm caused flooding. For three weeks, the residents had absolutely no running water. Once the water was turned back on, viral videos showed that their newly running tap water was a deep brown. In response, the city issued a boil water order, public schools were closed, and for the lucky few whose showers and toilets still worked, the city advised that residents shower with “their mouths closed.”
