Freedom Versus Entitlement: Examining an American Philosophy

Freedom is one of the core ideals that our country was founded on, and without it our nation lacks its very identity. It is imbued in all aspects of American society and it is what drives our government and social change. But lately there have been more and more instances of where certain freedoms have been imposed on. In these moments, we must remember to make an important distinction between the American ideal of “freedom” versus “entitlement,” that which freedom is often mistaken for. Though they are similar, they are not the same, and therefore mistaking one for the other could lead our country into dangerous territory. Freedom is the right to act and think as one chooses without fear of persecution, whereas entitlement is the belief that this is guaranteed. For example, in this country, people have the freedom to pursue happiness, but people are not automatically granted it. Freedom is not the same as entitlement, but believing that they are puts people and their very freedoms and rights at risk.
