US Midterms: 23-Year-Old Indian-Origin Muslim Woman Elected to Illinois Assembly

The 23-year-old Muslim Indian-American Democrat Nabeela Syed makes history by becoming the youngest member to be elected to the Illinois General Assembly after defeating Republican opponent Chris Bos with 52.3% of the vote. In one of the most divisive midterm elections for the 51st District in the Illinois State House of Representatives, a total of five lawmakers of Indian ancestry from the dominant Democratic Party were elected to the US House of Representatives, with several others being elected in state legislatures.
As she announced her significant victory on Twitter, Nabeela Syed introduced herself and thanked the public for their support. I am a Muslim woman of Indian descent who is 23 years old. We recently took control of a Republican-held suburban district.
