What’s Up with High U.S. Egg Prices?

As someone who eats plenty of eggs, the higher prices have not slipped my attention. If you have been grocery shopping recently, or even checked social media, it’s pretty obvious that egg prices are soaring. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price of a dozen eggs rose 59% last year with prices more than doubling in West Virginia and six other states in the upper Midwest. This jump in price was even more shocking in the case of eggs classified grade A, with prices soaring up to almost 140%.

The United States Has Hit Its Debt Ceiling, Prompting Economic Concerns

The United States hit its debt limit this Thursday, prompting the Treasury Department to be using a series of accounting maneuvers to ensure the federal government can keep paying its bills ahead of what’s expected to be a protracted fight over whether to increase the borrowing cap. Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen wrote to Congress in a letter. According to Yellen, the government will begin asking lawmakers to raise or suspend the debt limit so that the government can continue meeting its financial obligations. She said that extraordinary measures would be taken to prevent the nation from breaching its statutory debt limit.

Major victories for abortion rights during the midterm elections are achieved nationwide

The biggest shock came in Republican-leaning Kentucky, where an antiabortion amendment was defeated, potentially opening the way for the restoration of abortion access in a state with one of the most stringent restrictions in the nation.
Voters in Michigan approved a ballot initiative that will enshrine the right to abortion in the state constitution, preventing a 1931 abortion ban from taking effect. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) ran for reelection in part by portraying herself as a champion of abortion rights.
And in North Carolina, where the state has developed into a crucial access point for people seeking abortions throughout the Southeast, Republicans failed to secure a veto-proof legislative supermajority, guaranteeing that Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper will continue to have the authority to veto restrictions on abortion.

Last week over 90 different civil society groups collectively wrote a letter to U.S President, Joe Biden, urging him not to send foreign troops to Haiti, and to instead support Haitian led diplomatic efforts to achieve political stability. The letter read: “We were heartened to see in your 2022 National Security Strategy a commitment to ‘not use our military to change regimes or remake societies,’ and we encourage you to follow through on that commitment in Haiti.”

Indiana Legislature First To Approve Abortion Bans Post-Roe

On Friday Indiana became the first state in the nation to approve abortion restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb quickly signed a near-total ban on the procedure shortly after lawmakers approved it. The ban is set to take effect on Sept. 12, and it includes some exceptions.

Following the sentencing of Brittney Griner in Russia to nine years in prison on Thursday, the WNBA world continues to show Griner their support.
