The career of swimmer Caeleb Dressel, who headlines the USA Olympics swimming team, has already been illustrious, with many saying he could be the next Michael Phelps – or even better. So, with all eyes on him at the Tokyo Olympics, he has done nothing but continue to impress. On Wednesday, Dressel competed in the men’s 100 M freestyle final, where he blew the field out of the water (couldn’t resist it) and set a new Olympic record.
With the 2021 NBA Draft just hours away, there is a lot of speculation over how the night will unfold. Who will go first overall? Will there be any blockbuster trades? Will anybody show up wearing a Fortnite jacket? (I really hope not). All of these questions, and more, will be answered at 8pm Thursday! With so much unpredictability and intrigue, here are my five bold (and some not so bold) predictions for what will happen tonight.
I was walking around ShopRite recently trying to find some healthier foods in the frozen section. I’m not much of a cook, so I like to look for things that I can heat up in the oven or microwave really easily and enjoy (one day I’ll learn to cook, one day). The entire nation was stunned on Tuesday morning to hear that Olympic gymnastics superstar Simone Biles was suddenly withdrawing from the All-Around Team Final in Tokyo. She left the floor shortly after her awkward landing on the vault, and came back out in her warmup clothes, where she sat out the rest of the day and cheered on her teammates. On Wednesday, she bowed out of the Individual All-Around Final to focus on her mental health, something she has been dealing with all Games long.
In an interview last week, longtime star of the NBC sitcom, ‘Community,’ which aired from 2009-2015, Joel McHale, talked about his time on the series and the drama that surrounded co-star Chevy Chase during his run on the comedy. On the latest edition of the podcast, ‘Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum,’ McHale was asked about his time on ‘Community,’ which had a cult following all throughout its run.
With the 2020-21 NBA season seeming like a distant memory now, all the focus turns to next season, and most importantly, these very crucial next few weeks. The NBA Draft is fast approaching, it’s on Thursday, July 29, and free agency starts on Monday, August 2, so most NBA teams are going to look very different soon as next season looms.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were in full swing this weekend, with a large number of athletes winning medals. On Sunday, there were a slew of events for swimming, with multiple Americans winning medals. In a major upset, Australian Ariarne Titmus beat out arguably the greatest female swimmer of all time, American Katie Ledecky, in the 400 M Women’s Freestyle Final.
After Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two Republican nominees from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy for the Committee to investigate the January 6 Capitol Attack, he retaliated by pulling all of his Republican choices, making it a mostly partisan committee. Now, however, Pelosi has appointed a Republican of her own to sit on the panel, Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger. Kinzinger is a long, outspoken critic of former President Trump, even calling for his removal from office the day after the deadly attack on the Capitol from his supporters that he helped incite.
The White House has announced that the US does not intend to lift travel restrictions put in place because of COVID, due to the surging Delta variant of the virus that is taking over. In an interview with CNN Monday, a White House Official said, “Given where we are today with the Delta variant, the United States will maintain existing travel restrictions at this point.” The Delta variant has become the dominant strain of the coronavirus, and the large amount of people who aren’t vaccinated make up most of the infected with the more contagious, and more deadly, strain.
With exactly a week until the 2021 NBA Draft, I thought I’d try my hand at doing a mock draft of the lottery, which are the first 14 picks. These picks are owned by the teams that missed the playoffs this year, although a team like the Orlando Magic, for example, has two picks in the lottery because of a trade made with the Minnesota Timberwolves. There will likely be trades before, or during, the draft next Thursday, July 29, but for the purposes for this mock, I’m going to assume that all the picks stay the same.
After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two Republicans from joining the panel to investigate the January 6 attack on the Capitol, Minority House Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled all of the GOP members that were set to serve on the committee as a form of protest. McCarthy was given the opportunity to select five members to join the committee, but Pelosi also has the power to reject any of those selections, which she chose to do after two of McCarthy’s choices. He selected Rep. Jim Jordan, of Ohio, and Rep. Jim Banks, of Indiana, who have long been outspoken supporters of former President Trump and his egregiously false claims of voter fraud that prompted the insurrection on January 6.
