Women’s Dress Codes put Aesthetic over Performance for Athletes

The conversation surrounding dress codes for female athletes is certainly not a new one. In many organizations, progress has been made, and women are allowed to wear clothing more suited to their activity, but there is still a very clear disparity between male and female dress codes in sports. A glaring example of this struck earlier this summer when Norway’s handball team decided to protest against their dress code.

Norway Women’s Handball Team is Fined for Protesting Dress Code

Norway’s women’s beach handball team wore long elastic shorts when competing against Spain during the Euro 2021 tournament. As a result, they were fined $1700 for breaking the sport’s dress code. International Handball Federation codes mandate that women wear tops with a bare midriff, and revealing bikini bottoms that are “cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.”
