On Tuesday, Harry Reid, the pugnacious former Democratic Senate leader who rose from poverty in Searchlight, Nevada, to the pinnacle of the U.S. Senate, died at the age of 82. Reid had spearheaded epic legislative battles through three decades in Congress as one of Congress’ most skilled negotiators. Reid rose from his humble beginnings in Nevada to become the most powerful politician to come from the state.
