The disastrous love affair of Roman general Marc Anthony and Egyptian Queen Cleopatra ended in 31 BC with the Battle of Actium. It was known as Rome versus the East. The victor, Octavian, would become Rome’s first emperor – Augustus – and Egypt would be ruled by the Romans for the next 500 years.
